SUMMARY:BECx as Risk Management Course
DESCRIPTION:October 5–8\, 2026 \nZero/Six Consulting | 1027 23rd Street Rear\, Galveston\, TX 77550 \n  \n$2\,500 per person  |  Register 3 or more and save — automatically discounted to $1\,650 per person \n  \n25 IIBEC CEUs | 15 AIA LU/HSWs | 3.3 ICC CEUs | BERM Certification Exam \n__________________________________________________________________________________________\nJoin NABCTA October 5th – 8th at Zero/Six Consulting in Galveston\, TX. You can expect four days of hands-on training\, real-world case studies\, and strategies to proactively manage building envelope risk. \nThis isn’t just another CEU class. It’s about learning structured processes that protect your projects and your firm. \nWhat You’ll Gain: \n\nA repeatable BECx framework\nPractical risk evaluation skills\nStronger documentation strategies\nA chance to take the BERM Certification Exam\n25 IIBEC CEUs + 15 AIA LU/HSWs + 3.3 ICC CEUs\n\nLawsuits in North America last an average of 17 months with the average value of construction disputes being $18 million. Building Envelope issues represented 75% of those claims. \nBuilding Envelope Commissioning (BECx) is a process that can manage construction defect liability by simply ensuring the performance of the building envelope. This course explains the BECx process and provides hands-on training for tests commonly performed on the building envelope. \nLearn from professionals with over 75 years of combined experience. Hands-on training and networking opportunities are unmatched. \n \n\nWho Should Attend? \nThis course is intended for anyone who participates in the design or construction of the exterior building envelope from a supervisory position: \n\nBuilding Officials\nFacility and Plant Managers\nArchitects & Engineers (Designers and CA staff)\nProgram Managers\nProject Managers\nSuperintendents\nTrade Foremen\nTesting Organizations\n\n__________________________________________________________________________________________\nCourse Description & Learning Objectives \nFor years\, we have commissioned the dynamic systems of a building to ensure performance throughout the building enclosure\, assuming that the static exterior building envelope would also perform. Over the last several years\, the process of commissioning (Cx) the exterior building envelope has gained momentum as a vital process in achieving optimal building performance. Reasons for the increased interest include updated code requirements\, incentives related to voluntary programs such as LEED\, and a steep rise in construction defect lawsuits related to the building envelope. \nThis 4-day course includes the five modules required to prepare for the exam for certification as a Building Envelope Risk Manager (BERM) by the North American Building Compliance Testing Association. The exam is administered on the last day of the course. \nModule 1: BECx Fundamentals \n\nUnderstand why BECx is critical in managing litigious exposure related to the design and construction of the building envelope and the benefits associated with high-performance building envelopes\nUnderstand the difference between the Commissioning Process of the past versus the movement towards “whole building commissioning” and how the evolution of codes (IBC and IECC) will influence the commissioning process moving forward\nUnderstand how to navigate the Cx process in an undefined process — managing conflicts between commissioning documents\, project specifications\, and manufacturer requirements\nBe familiar with traditional BECx testing and understand when specialized testing may be required\n\nModule 2: The Vertical Envelope \n\nUnderstand the basic types of vertical wall systems\, how performance standards are determined\, and when delegated design may be required\nUnderstand the various components of the wall systems that comprise the vertical building envelope\nUnderstand what it means to achieve environmental separation and the roles that air barriers/water resistive barriers play in the process\nUnderstand testing related to commissioning the vertical portions of the building envelope\n\nModule 3: Horizontal Roof/Plaza Systems \n\nUnderstand the basic types of horizontal roof/plaza systems and the performance requirements for each\, and when delegated design may be required\nUnderstand the various components of the horizontal envelope\nUnderstand how to achieve environmental separation — roofing vs. waterproofing\nUnderstand testing related to the horizontal building envelope\n\nModule 4: Fenestration Systems \n\nUnderstand the basic types of fenestration systems\, the performance requirements for each\, and when delegated design may be required\nUnderstand the various components of the fenestration systems related to the building envelope\nUnderstand how to maximize environmental separation by product selection — low performing systems (storefront) vs. high performance systems (curtainwall)\nUnderstand testing related to the fenestration located within the building envelope\n\nModule 5: Pressures on the Building Envelope \n\nUnderstand the theory of how wind speed creates loads (pressures) on the building envelope\, and how size and geometry affect those loads\nUnderstand which portions of the building envelope are typically not engineered by the engineer of record and will require delegated design\nUnderstand the various structural components of the building envelope\nUnderstand testing related to the structural requirements for cladding attached to the building envelope
